The Morehead Inn Review + Travel Guide

A historic bed & breakfast in Charlotte NC, The Morehead Inn is full of charm and charisma.

Just a little over a week ago Joshua and I had the opportunity to take a little staycation just under 5 miles from our home. We honestly pass the inn where we stayed almost every single day and have been saying for years we need to plan a night to check it out. So finally that happened. We made the short drive to The Morehead Inn and prepared for a full on date night staycation.

We spent the first hour or so walking around the inn exploring the rooms and property. This little inn is truly so charming and full of character! The main room was just recently redone and it is absolutely beautiful, photos below! I fell in love with their ivory couches and light blue floral pillows.

THE HISTORY

The home was built in 1917 by a London-born architect William Peeps for Charles Campbell Coddington. Mr. Campbell was originally from Pennsylvania {like me} and moved to Charlotte after marrying Marjorie Lyon. The two met when Mr. Campbell was traveling to the Carolinas to distribute Buick automobiles. Mr. Campbell spotted Marjorie at a local drug store in Greensboro, North Carolina and that was that!

They lived in the home until 1925 when Majorie sadly passed away. Mr. Campbell then purchased the Duke Mansion just a five minute drive from The Morehead Inn.

The inn remained a private residence until 1980 and in 1984 it opened as the Morehead Inn.

WHERE TO STAY

Well obviously, the Morehead Inn! Joshua and I stayed on the main floor in the Solarium Room. This room offers lots of natural light, a full living room, and a separate bedroom with a king size bed. The inn offers 12 rooms including king and queen bed options. Each has unique decor and it’s own character. There are also rooms porch access on the second floor. This sweet little porch overlooks the backyard of the home. These rooms are extra special during the spring and fall seasons when you can leave your doors open and enjoy the fresh air.

Aside from the room, you can explore the property and main floor of the inn! Which includes a beautiful main room, a library-esque room with beautiful birds, and a grand staircase that is straight out of a movie.  Outside there are a couple of spots to enjoy the weather. Including a front porch and side porch with rocking chairs.

Lastly, there is a full breakfast included in you stay! This is held downstairs in the dining room. The morning we were there they had eggs, toast, bacon, and grits. The grits were definitely my favorite!

WHERE TO EAT

While Breakfast is included at the Morehead Inn, you’ll need to leave the property for lunch and dinner. There are so many delicious options near by you won’t have to venture too far. Or you can if you’d like! For dinner, Joshua and I tried a restaurant that had been on our list for a couple of weeks, Fran’s Filling Station. Which was a quick five minute uber ride from the inn.

Fran’s Filling Station –  Where we ate. We absolutely loved it! We had a sweet table against the wall, the perfect spot to enjoy an intimate date night. We opted for the flash fried brussel sprouts although we wanted just about everything on the small plate menu. Then it was a mediterranean burger + fries for me and the Fran’s meatballs for Joshua. Both of us ranted and raved about our picks! Joshua even had enough left over for lunch the next day. We then received chocolate cake as a compliment from Fran as our wait was a little long. The cake was to die for and we truly devoured it within seconds. Pretty impressive for two people who weren’t looking to have dessert haha.

Mama Ricotta’s – This is one of the most recommended and famous italian restaurants in Charlotte. I have not dined here yet (honestly the biggest italian food fan) however, Joshua has several times and can’t say enough good things about it!

Vivace – Is a contemporary italian trattoria with authentic italian food. We have both dined here several and LOVE it! Their fig & prosciutto pizza is absolutely amazing! We usually dine on their outdoor patio that has a great view of uptown or in the bar area (more casual dining).

Hi Tide Poke & Raw Bar – Another spot we haven’t been quite yet but this is honestly within walking distance from the Morehead Inn. I’ve also heard from great reviews from friends. The perfect spot for lunch, happy hour (half price oysters Monday-Thursday), or a casual dinner.

WHAT TO DO

Outdoors: I would highly recommend walking around the Dilworth area and exploring the neighborhoods right around the Morehead Inn. There are so many beautiful southern homes around. Taking a morning or evening walk would be my top recommendation.

If you come during the summer months there’s a great farmer’s market within walking distance. Locals call it the Kings Drive Farmer’s Market. You’ll find fresh produce, flowers and plants, seafood, and fresh baked bread + pastries you cannot pass up. The farmer’s market is open Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday.

There is also a green way within walking distance and right before the farmer’s market. Here you can walk to the Metropolitan where Vivace is located along with several additional restaurants + shops. Or go the opposite way and visit one of the prettiest Charlotte parks, Freedom Park

Shop: Southpark Mall is the closest and in my opinion best mall in Charlotte and the surrounding areas. I would highly recommend stopping in if you haven’t before. While there are several typical mall shops (J.Crew, Anthropologie, Loft, etc…) there are also several more upscale shops such as Louis Vuitton, Tiffany’s, Neiman Marcus, and David Yurman to name a few.

Just a stones throw from Southpark Mall is another little shopping area with restaurants too, Phillips Place. This is one of my favorites and has been a go to place for us for years.

Needless to say we had a wonderful time and enjoyed a mini staycation here in Charlotte. If you’re looking for a sweet historic inn in the Charlotte area, the Morehead Inn is your place!

P.S. I made a little video from the Instagram stories I posted from visiting the Morehead Inn. You can view the video on the Louella Reese Facebook page.

Thank you to The Morehead Inn for providing our stay + breakfast on property! All views and opinions are of course my own.

Eeh you look darling! I’ve always wanted to visit the East Coast but other than seeing grandparents in Florida and a school trip to Virginia, I’ve never gone back. You inspire me to make it out that way. Also, the photos of you on the couch and bed, is that a nightie or jumpsuit?? It’s so lovely.

I prefer staying at Inns and B&Bs over hotels because it’s so much more a personalized, luxurious experience!
