Fun fact: Joshua and I are obsessed with kombucha. Even more fun fact: Joshua refused to try it for probably two full years – when he finally did he was hooked and now may be even more obsessed than I am. We typically pick up a couple when we do our weekly grocery run. Plus an extra here and there if we’re feeling under the weather or really over indulged. The drink leaves us feeling refreshed, clean, and a little healthier.

So what is kombucha exactly?

Kombucha is a fermented tea drink that’s made by adding yeast and a culture of bacteria to a mixture of black or green tea, sugar, and sometimes additional flavorings or fruit juice. After you blend the tea with sugar, it becomes kombucha with the help of something called S.C.O.B.Y., which stands for symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast. This live bacteria sets the stage for a fermentation process, which is what gives kombucha its slight effervescence and tart-and-tangy taste.

What are the potential benefits of drinking kombucha?

Kombucha has several potential benefits with the key one having to do with your gut! As you have probably read on every kombucha bottle you’ve touched, the fermented beverage contains probiotics. Which are the “good bacteria” that are considered helpful for your body, especially your digestive system.

A couple of additional potential benefits include ridding your body of toxins, boosts your energy, boost your immune system, ward off high blood pressure and heart disease.

Below I’m sharing my top five favorite kombuchas to drink – two of them are favorites of Joshua. These are also my go to brands when it comes to kombucha – you do want to make sure you’re purchasing from a reputable source as improperly made kombucha can be unhealthy and potentially harmful to your body. So go with the trusted brands!

Lenny Boy Brewing Lavenderade

This is hands down my favorite kombucha! It is THE kombucha that actually turned me into a lover of the fermented tea drink. After a few sips of Lenny Boy Brewing’s Lavenderade I was hooked. The crisp tartness from fresh squeezed lemons complements the floral calming effects of lavender flowers. As Lenny Boy Brewing says, this kombucha will instantly take you to your happy place.

* this is also Joshua’s favorite Kombucha!

Contains Filtered Water, Kombucha Culture, Lemons, Green Tea, Lavender Flower, and Cane Sugar.

Lenny Boy Brewing Good Ol’ Ginger

After drinking kombucha for a while I started trying out some of the classic flavors, such as ginger. At first, the ginger was overwhelming and too strong for my tastebuds. But after drinking flavors like the mentioned one above and below, I found myself enjoying and reaching for the classic ginger on occasion. One of the key drivers for that, ginger is amazing for the immune system and a digestive aid. You honestly feel a little cleaner, healthier, and stronger after drinking a Good Ol’ Ginger.

Health-Ade Blood Orange Carrot Ginger

My grocery store go to kombucha! 90% of the time our grocery stores are well stocked with Health-Ade’s Blood Orange Carrot Ginger and I’m 100% likely to pick one up when they are! This flavor may sound a little unique, a little odd and I won’t lie it is BUT the combination is surprisingly refreshing and delicious. Has a slightly tart, yet robust flavor!

Contains Kombucha Culture, Organic Black Tea, Organic Green Tea, Organic Carrot Juice, Organic Blood Orange Juice, and Organic Ginger Juice.

Health-Ade Grapefruit

Fun fact: I don’t like actual grapefruit but I love grapefruit flavored items. Case and point Health-Ade’s Grapefruit kombucha. It is brewed with cold-pressed juice from Ruby Red grapefruits and offers a balanced sweet and tart citrus flavor for an uplifting start to your morning or afternoon treat.

GT’s Gingerade

This is our go to kombucha and flavor when shopping at Aldi. They on occasion have Health-Aid but typically it is GT’s. Joshua and I both reach for the ginger. It is fresh and makes us feel better after an indulgent weekend – we usually hit up Aldi on Sunday afternoon.

Again, the ginger is great to cleanse, heal, and rebalance your system.

Contains Kombucha Culture, Black Tea, Green Tea, Kiwi Juice, Fresh Pressed Ginger Juice

This makes me seriously wish I loved kombucha. My husband is a huge fan, and even my best friend adores it. But I’ve just never gotten into the flavor. And I know it would be so beneficial for me, considering I have a literal gut disease. BUT maybe one day I’ll be able to find one that works for me. I’ll have to test some of these!

    • I definitely think it’s all about finding the right one for you and trying a bunch here and there. I hated it at first but now absolutely love it. I would highly recommend the Lenny Boy Brewing kombuchas as they are so light – both in flavor and in sugar.
