Guys: How To Dress – First Date

Shirt | Half Zip | Jeans | Belt | Wallet | Cologne | Loafers

Finally asked her out, plans are set, now what to wear?

Let’s say your first date is to lunch, dinner, and/or a movie. You want to look like you made an effort, pulled yourself together but didn’t try too hard. By this I mean you need to look as though you have been looking forward to the date (which hopefully you have, otherwise that’s not really a good sign) and put some thought into what you were wearing to see and hopefully impress this gal. I promise she is doing exactly the same.

Shirt. A classic button down shirt or polo will do just fine! Only real tip here is make sure it’s wrinkle free and keep it simple with either a solid, plaid, or flannel.

Denim. Dark slim or boot cut. This is another item to keep simple. No holes or rips, crazy washings (meaning the color/fade on your jeans), and please no crazy embroidery detail on your pockets or around the seams. No gal wants a guy wearing more expensive designer jeans than her. Also wear a belt. It makes you look more pulled together and sagging pants have not been in for a very long time (if truly ever).

Have a decent wallet. I’m definitely old fashion and think that the guy should pay for the first date but even if you end up going halfsies you’ll still have to pull out your wallet. No girl is going to be impressed with a velcro or duct tape wallet. Also by your twenties you should feel the need to invest in a quality wallet. Plus the amount of times you have to pull out your wallet to pay bar tabs, cab fares, apartment bills, and the list goes on, you might as well have something nice to look at.

Shoes. This should come as no shocker as something woman find to be pretty important! As your walking up to her after checking out your hair, smile, shirt, and denim this is where her eyes head. She will judge. No getting around it. So set yourself up for success and wear a pair of good quality leather lace ups, loafers, or chukka boats. Take a look at this post for all the info you’ll need on shoes!

Cologne. Scent is huge and a great way to stick is a gal’s head. Just don’t wear too much! A spray on your chest under your shirt and one on your hair will do just fine. If you already have a good cologne stick to it! If you’re on the search for one stick to something classic, fresh, and manly. Some good choices Adidas Dynamic Pulse, YSL La Nuit De Lhomme Frozen, and Polo Blue (my personal favorite).

No active wear. I’m sure you already knew this but just wanted to make sure! This attire is left for the gym, playing sports with the guys, or if you’re both into working out maybe taking a run together on the second or third date since you’re obviously going to hit this first date out of the park!
