Today I’m sharing some of the biggest trends for fall for men and the 8 items you need in your closet before the cooler temps hit. Every item is a classic, something you can wear over and over and with just about everything. These items will have you set for casual guys night, work parties, dates, and day to day. Every item will carry you into the winter months as well with just an extra layer or two needed. Scroll through the images below each item and click to be directed to that website to take a closer look or purchase.
Over shirt – to be worn as an extra layer. Light enough for the fall to be worn as a jacket over a t-shirt or lightweight button down. Perfect additionally layer in the winter to add a little extra warmth. Best in solid darker colors (or larger plaid) like green, blue, brown, or red.
Jeans in a dark wash – the darker wash looks best for the fall and winter seasons. This wash also allows you to wear denim to a little more dressy occasions. Can be worn with every item on this list, including the navy sports coat. If you are wearing with the sports coat be sure you have a more slim fit denim (not tight) and that it is a very dark wash.
Solid, Classic Sweatshirt – another great layering piece or one to wear with a similar white undershirt. Again looks best in darker shades navy, hunter green, red, or gray. Keep it simple with no graphic designs, wording, or sports logo unless wearing to tailgate or other sporting event.
Plaid Shirt – a closet staple. Easy to dress up or dress down. Can be worn under the over shirt, navy sports coat, regular coat, or by itself. Should be slightly tailored or slim fit. If wearing with your denim and navy sports coat be sure to tuck it in!
Boots – necessary for the cooler temps and as mentioned in the How to Dress: First Date post they can be worn to both casual and slightly more dressy occasions. Choose a darker pair in either brown, gray, or black. Should always match the shade of your belt.
Jacket – obviously necessary for the cooler temps and a great layering piece. Choose one that matches your style most. Bombers, peacoats, or cotton windbreaks like the Polo one below are all great options.
Navy Sportscoat – this jacket will carry you through all sorts of events and is definitely worth the investment. Can be worn with dark wash denim or khakis. Works with anything from a nice v-neck t-shirt to a plaid tailored button down to a oxford and tie. Should be well tailored to fit your shape.
Duffel Bag – the perfect bag for guys as it works for taking to and from the gym, weekend getaways, work trips, and since y’all never carry all that much really a week long vacation too. For a more professional look go for a darker color again like brown, black, or gray but if you want to have a little fun with it, go for it! The blue and red has a bit of character or the camo in the dark hues for a different look.
