Fall Basics: Save // Spend // Splurge

Fall Basics

As much as I want to hang on to summer {and thankfully we have about a month left} fall is right around the corner. The stores are filling their racks and shelves with sweaters, light jackets, boots and more. For me fall is all about the basics. I like to purchase quality pieces I can wear all season then layer with come winter. I also don’t mind investing in a few more expensive pieces if I know I’ll get my wear out of them. On the other hand though trendy pieces are worth saving on as you never know how long they’ll stick around! I’ve put together what I think are the top ten pieces to have this fall from basics to a few trendy pieces. All at three different price points and a few with a couple extra options!

Take a look back at previous Save // Spend // Splurge posts here.

1. Floppy hat – one of my absolute favorite pieces! I’ve worn one a couple times this summer and will be carrying that look well into fall as well. They’re perfect for day hair days or when you just want to add a little something extra to your look.

2. Big sunnies – who doesn’t love a good pair of big sunnies? Even moving into the cooler {and cloudier seasons} they are necessary! I’m crushing hard on the Illesteva pair. P.S. Check out Ditto and use code LOUELLA for 1 month free

3. Oversized clutch – all about the clutch recently. I can either be found carrying a clutch or my Madewell tote {with the clutch inside}. These oversized clutch are perfect for throwing everything you really need inside and looking way snazzier than a tote or satchel.

4. A lightweight jacket for layering – you always need a good jackets for layering once the cooler temps start to arrive or when in a restaurant that is absolutely freezing. All of these jackets are perfect to wear over a lighter top and later into the season with multiple layers. I have this Ciao Milano Anorak {see here} and am OBSESSED!

5. Classic gingham or plaid button down shirt – I mean can you ever go wrong purchasing a classic gingham or plaid shirt? I don’t think so! These shirts will never go out of style and will forever be an easy go to item. Pick up one or two {or even three} this season. You won’t regret it!

6. Ankle boots – I joined the ankle boot club last year and am now a loyal member! They’re perfect for wearing with skinny jeans, flowy dresses, or even shorts in the summer season.

Save: Sole Society Natasha Boot* // Spend: Sam Edelman Suede Boots* or Dolce Vita Kadie Bootie // Splurge: Cole Haan Chesney Bootie

7. Fringe handbag – this is one of those trendy items that has actually stuck around for quite a while now. With all of the 70s items coming in style I think it’ll be stinking around for a good while {at least fall/winter}. Also you can always carry it at a music festival if it does end up going out of trend by spring 😉

8. Casual sneakers – talk to me a year and a half ago and this item would have NEVER been on a must have list for me. Or really on any kind of list. But once I purchased my first pair of chucks there was no turning back. They really do go with a lot more than I would have ever imagined and add just the right amount of laid back to any look.

9. Skinny Jeans – this is a duh! Am I right?

10. Lace-up flats – another trendy item that seems to making it big for another season. We saw a lot of lace-up sandals this spring/summer and now their sister is making a splash for the fall season. I have to be honest. I hated the lace-up sandals but I love the flats…I know, I know it doesn’t really make sense. But the flats are just cuter 😉
